"ELEMENTS OF BEING"

Curious palms lean over
highway rubble
and begin the requiem

A Settling has happened here
A Settling has happened here
A Settling has happened here
Now she can begin

Again

“Elements of Being,” curated by AIRIE Artistic Director Cornelius Tulloch, blends evocative soundscape compositions with recordings from the Everglades, weaved into the interdisciplinary performance and installation “Earth Requiem,” conceived by Diana Wege. Spoken word by Arsimmer McCoy, an original opera piece by Kunya Rowley (Executive Artistic Dir. of Hued Songs), and original choreography by Gentry Isaiah George (Co-Founder & Artistic Director of Zest Collective), amplifying the power of movement, song, and the written word, as a narrative of environmental preservation and equality.

Earth Requiem, by Diana Wege, is presented as the nexus between environmental and social justice orchestrated by WOVEN Creative Director Klay Enos with four movements written by composers Errollyn Wallen, Eve Beglarian, Jeff Beal, and Sophy Him. Earth Requiem seeks to unify everyone through a shared love for the planet.

Artist-in-Residence-in-the-Everglades (AIRIE), in partnership with WOVEN (We Oppose Violence Everywhere), debuted Elements of Being, a narrative-based installation at the European Cultural Center (ECC) Personal Structures exhibition in Venice, Italy. In its seventh edition of the biennial contemporary art exhibition, Personal Structures is on view from April 20th until November 2024 at the Palazzo Bembo in Venice, Italy.

Congratulations to Poet & Educator Arsimmer McCoy, recipient of the 2024 Marjory Stoneman Douglas Poetry Award! Arsimmer is a Miami Gardens, Florida-based storyteller, collaborative artist, educator, and cultural worker, who has been dedicated to these disciplines for over a decade!

The award ceremony was held at The Marjory Stoneman Douglas @biscaynenaturecenter where the community gathered for a workshop and reading inspired by the landscapes Marjory passionately fought to preserve.

The workshop was led by Yaddyra Peralta, winner of the 2023 Marjory Stoneman Douglas prize. Each year, the MSD prize is awarded to a South Florida poet who represents qualities that reflect Douglas and her legacy.

The audience was also the first to hear An Elegy for Tokitae, a collaborative poem written by O, Miami’s elementary & middle school students to commemorate the life of Tokitae the orca, locally known as “Lolita,” who died tragically last year after 53 years in captivity at Miami’s storied Seaquarium just a few weeks shy of freedom. This project promotes compassion for and reflection on, the life and plight of these amazing marine mammals through the art of poetry. Project by Francis Oliver and JV Portela
